Nine used every available opportunity to plug Karl for the Logie, even calling in some celebrity favours to throw their weight behind the campaign.

It was the former Brisbane journalist’s first nomination for his work with the Today show.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile was the other big winner at the Logie Awards.

The third series in the lucrative Underbelly franchise took out several of the major awards, including the Silver Logie for most outstanding drama series.

Firass Dirani won silver for his role on the show, scoring the Graham Kennedy Award for most outstanding new talent, beating Packed To The Rafters favourite Ryan Corr.

He also won in the public-voted category for most popular new male talent.

Underbelly beat Packed To The Rafters in the outstanding drama series Silver Logie category. But Rafters is the public favourite, winning the most popular drama series.

Former Rush actress Claire Van Der Boom won silver for most outstanding actress for Sisters of War, while Asher Keddie won the award in the most popular actress category for her role in Offspring.

Rake star Richard Roxburgh won the most outstanding actor Silver Logie but Hugh Sheridan proved he is still the public favourite winning most popular actor. He beat fellow Rafters cast members Erik Thomson and Michael Caton to take out the award.

Chrissie Swan was rewarded for her popularity on The Circle winning a Logies’ nod for most popular new female talent on Australian TV.

Stefanovic also won the most popular presenter Logie over Swan, Adam Hills, Hamish Blake and Shaun Micallef.

In the reality series Logie, competition was stiff with Dancing With The Stars, MasterChef, The Biggest Loser, The Farmer Wants a Wife and The X Factor up against each other but there were no surprises when the ratings juggernaut MasterChef won.

Nine, which broadcasts the event, were the major winners with seven Logies.

Seven, Ten and ABC all took home five each, while SBS and subscription television failed to win any Logies despite several subscription dramas such as Spirited, Tangle and Satisfaction all earning critical acclaim.
